Existential Perspective Applied to Client Experiencing Racism

The existential approach to therapy aims to help the client resolve an inner conflict and reduce anxiety through meaning-making, responsibility, and self-determination. It is based on the principles of humanism, individual freedom, and potential for growth (Diamond, 2021). In the case of Gwen, there are several existential questions she faces in her life. She is concerned about losing her child as a result of racism, violence, and injustice that she observes on the news every day. Therefore, Gwen wonders why young black men have to lose their lives and what is wrong with the society that cultivates racism. She feels helpless and terrified of the discriminating and unfair world where her child has to live.

During this session, Gwen feels overwhelmed and emphasizes such feelings as exhaustion, anxiety, and fear. Therefore, while being in the room with her, I would experience similar emotions unless I used my professional skills. The existential approach deals with the following subjects: the meaning of life, responsibility, free will, and death (Diamond, 2021). As Gwen shares her concerns, I can observe these themes in her narrative, linked to the problem of racism and its consequences for young people like her son.

As the client reveals her feelings and fears, I can notice a change in her perspective when she realizes her power to create meaning in her life and use various circumstances. Even though Gwen’s worries cause her additional stress, her realization of people’s mortality and the fragility of life can help with the meaning-making process. As a spiritual and strong woman, she can make efficient choices to improve her and her son’s existence. Overall, existential therapy can assist the client in achieving a fulfilled life and reducing anxiety.
