Adolescent Anxiety as a Research Topic: Background and Literature Search Strategies

Research Topic of Interest

Anxiety disorders are among the most frequent mental health issues among adolescents. Anxiety has a significant impact on an adolescent’s overall well-being, familial and social connections, and academic success. Anxiety disorders are defined by anxiety, concern, or dread that considerably hinder one’s capacity to operate normally and are out of proportion to the situation (Chen et al., 2020).

Anxiety can manifest as physical problems. Clinical findings serve as the foundation for diagnosis. Behavioral therapy and medication, typically selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, are used to treat the disorder.

Anxiety is natural and typical at specific ages and in certain situations, such as separation anxiety in newborns, dread of the dark in toddlers, and test anxiety in students (Parodi et. al., 2022). This mild and transient reaction to stressful events is considered normal and sufficient anxiety, and it increases in situations of high subjective significance of the decision, lack of knowledge and time, and external danger, and aids in adaptation to unfamiliar situations. However, under certain objective and subjective situations, anxiety becomes overexpressed, loses its adaptive nature, and is classified as abnormal.

Overview of Current Research and Search Strategies

There has been various research on anxiety, and this topic piqued Freud’s curiosity; its popularity has grown greatly since then. The current approach is distinguished by the concept of anxiety’s multifactorial character, which is founded on the awareness of the unity of biological, psychological, and social components of anxiety illness (Lee et al., 2020).

Many papers were discovered when looking for publications on this topic in databases. Typically, anxiety in teenagers is investigated in conjunction with depression. To improve the rigor and efficiency of the database search for your PICO(T) inquiry, the search strategy must be strengthened. Only publications published after 2020 will be utilized, ensuring that the data is applicable. This will also aid in identifying the most recent therapies, thereby improving care delivery. Furthermore, to obtain the most accurate findings relevant to the issue, publications with a major focus on anxiety in teenagers will be selected rather than those focused on other diseases.
