Affection in Children in Foster Care Placements

When placing children in foster families, it is necessary to remember that the child must formulate organized attachments. Therefore, helping foster parents in developing parenting behavior plays a key role. The primary purpose of the foster care system is to protect children and provide them with a calm, safe, and friendly atmosphere. It is important to remember that the system will also focus on reuniting children with biological parents. For this reason, social services need to work with foster parents and biological ones.

An essential element that influences the attachment style is the parent’s attitude towards the child. Parental synchronicity, support, encouragement, and nurturing are crucial to formulating an organized attachment style. Everyday situations include communicating with children, repeating their words, and caring when distressed, falling, or wanting to cry.

Attachment is a bidirectional process because children are a reflection of parental behavior. For example, children who face difficult situations during childhood may act as if they do not need care. Infants’ attitude to the world depends on their upbringing and how their parents treat them.

The consequences of disorganized attachments refer to behavioral dysregulation and emotional instability. In such children, the concepts of family, love, and care are violated. Therefore, children with disorganized attachments often suffer from depression and self-doubt. As a result, many infants develop psychological problems from lack of attention, nurturance, and love.

Affection has a considerable impact on a child’s future life. It is essential to add that it is in childhood that values and principles are laid. Children with caring parents confidently feel part of the community, understand ethical and social norms, possess emotional intelligence, and focus on career success and aspirations.
