Emerging Adulthood: Challenges, Priorities, and Support Strategies Presented in TED Talks

Introduction

Emerging maturity is a significant life stage that has been the focus of various scholarly discussions. Due to its transitory nature, this stage of life is sometimes veiled in uncertainty. It displays an intriguing complexity that calls for a deeper explanation. This PSA will give older people who work with emerging adults a greater understanding of the distinctive characteristics and challenges that this group encounters.

Summary of TEDx Talks

Defining Emerging Adulthood

TEDx Talks (2015) claims that emerging adults are frequently people between 18 and 29. Their independence and curiosity about the possibilities of life are well recognized. They usually go through a protracted period of self-discovery, instability, and identity development, and frequently feel midway between adolescence and fully-fledged adulthood (TEDx Talks, 2015). This time is critical for self-definition and personal growth as these people navigate the complexities of this transitional life stage.

Key Developmental Tasks and Challenges in Emerging Adulthood

Emerging adults are actively discovering and completing a variety of life responsibilities. They are primarily focused on intimacy versus isolation, which aligns with Erikson’s psychological phases of development (TEDx Talks, 2015). They try to prevent feeling alone by establishing close relationships. Each decision made during these periods could have long-term repercussions regarding schooling, profession, and interpersonal connections (Jay, n.d.). Such discoveries of emerging adulthood strongly shape their identity and future course in life.

Finding fulfilling work, maintaining meaningful relationships, and developing their identities are the top priorities of emerging adults. According to Jay (n.d.), many people fear making poor choices because they might prevent the future they want from happening. They experience anxiety and uncertainty due to worries about their financial security and societal expectations (Wheaton College, 2016). Furthermore, these people frequently struggle to balance their personal goals and social expectations.

Jay’s session offers advice on encouraging young individuals to make the most of their 20s and not postpone making major life decisions. The speaker highlights the value of proactive preparation, which is the most helpful piece of advice for bold steps for emerging adults (Jay, n.d.). Conversely, the least helpful advice is viewing this life stage as only an extension of adolescence (TEDx Talks, 2015). This oversimplification undercuts the distinctive difficulties and challenges that define this time.

Evaluating Advice

Any young adult might benefit from thoroughly embracing the present while also appreciating the considerable influence this stage of life has on the future. My advice for myself is to make deliberate judgments, actively pursue personal development, and remember that the decisions made at this time will shape the rest of one’s life, as advised by Wheaton College (2016). Additionally, I would benefit from developing resilience and flexibility at this time to improve my ability to handle transitions to the following stages.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it is essential to comprehend emerging adults to create positive interactions and offer the support they need. The distinct stage of life known as emerging adulthood, characterized by its duties and concerns, has a tremendous impact on one’s future. Emerging adults can, therefore, successfully traverse this phase of their lives provided they have a proper grasp of this life stage and make deliberate decisions.
