It would be reasonable to claim that core values are essential to any person in all spheres of life. I suggest that each individual comes to his or her fundamental principles of living through the continuous and enriching experience and understanding. From a personal perspective, my core values involve honesty, a sense of humor, and optimism. My first point is that honesty is a key to establishing significant social relations. Second, a sense of humor is a useful ability to look at this world. Third, optimism is essential in terms of organizing my life. These values are a great foundation for my personal development, and a discussion on them will be given, appealing to the academic writing practices so that their benefits could be shown.
Honesty is a notion that may have a positive or negative impact on our lives. From a young age, our parents teach everyone to be honest, attempting to implant in children the concept that becoming honest implies being human and not doing anything that society would not accept. Lies, deception, timidity, and the fear of being revealed are all common characteristics of bad conduct. As a result, an honest person attempts to act in such a manner that they will not be embarrassed afterward and will not have to hide something or lie. If one is honest and ethical, they will be treated with greater respect and understanding. One may trust and rely on honest individuals, confiding in them and believing that they will not divulge secrets or experiences to others. Such persons uphold their promises and win others’ respect.
There are occasions when honesty and integrity may be harmful to a person. People might be overly direct with their statements and insult other people. Of course, the truth should be communicated in such instances, but in a kind and discreet manner so as not to anger the individual. Humans lie most of the time to make themselves look stronger than they are or because they are ashamed of their favorite activity or passion. Honest individuals have three major advantages: they can be who they are, be trusted, and be appreciated. Such individuals know how to exult in their friends and family’s achievement, without envy or betrayal.
For me, the concept of optimism is closely connected with the concept of trust in people and life in general. Classically, optimism is defined as a conscious desire to see the positive aspects in everything and focus on them. Indeed, scientists have done a number of studies on optimism and mental health. In particular, it was found that optimists are more enterprising energetic less likely to be depressed or experience bouts of loneliness. Unlike optimists, pessimists are more likely to give up in a difficult situation, which can lead to depression. In fact, the totality of phenomena we encounter is fairly neutral as a whole. But our attitude towards it, as in the case of playing with ourselves, determines how we evaluate these events and what story we tell about them. It is better to take the position of an optimist and live a happier life on the same set of phenomena and events.
A sense of humor is seen to be a marker of intelligence for many people. Humor, according to evolutionists, is one of the elements in sexual selection. There is a link between intellect and a great sense of humor. Intelligence indicates problem-solving abilities, but it also includes condensed intellect, erudition, and the capacity to work with the collected information. Cognition, on the other hand, might be excellent without a good sense of humor, which is an indication of creativity. Creativity requires the capacity to recognize non-standard methods, qualities, and relationships, as well as the ability to go beyond, in some cases breaking restrictions. The link between a sense of humor and originality demonstrates that humor may help people solve creative problems.
Humor is based on a persistent search for inconsistencies, ambiguities, and vagueness in the universe. If a well-dressed individual stumbles and falls into a puddle after just getting out of his luxury automobile, this is a conflict of social perspectives: high and low status. Punchlines, which are focused on using ambiguities in words, are an illustration of more cerebral comedy. The beginning of the statement establishes one meaning of the term, while the conclusion appeals to a different meaning of the same word.
The above discussion was dedicated to my core values – honesty, optimism, and sense of humor. It was shown that each of these values could bring a number of benefits within the scope of both routine occasions and professional spheres. Through the presented reflections, I got the opportunity to realize my personal strength, which will be useful for me in the future.
