Jürgen Habermas’ Theory of Communication Action

Introduction

Jürgen Habermas is renowned as one of the most significant societal philosophers globally. Habermas has established communication action, which helps to refurbish and convey cultural awareness to achieve mutual understanding. In this event, individuals create personalities and also a coordinate movement towards solidarity and social interaction.

The theory has various issues, which are the development of a balanced perception and which are not limited or tied to individualistic and subjectivistic premises of social theory and modern philosophy. Secondly, Habermas has also created a two-level societal notion that integrates the system paradigms with the “lifeworld” concept of socialization. Finally, this modernity theory is critical such that it accounts for as well as analyzes its own pathologies in a way that suggests a redistribution of norms in disagreements situations.

The Element of the Theory of Communicative Action

Jürgen’s principle of communication action is related to the variation of two ideas of rationality, which direct activity by influencing knowledge. There are three “lifeworld” structural components which correspond to the functions, which are culture, society, and personality. At the cultural level, this is a standard of awareness that communication participants incorporate for themselves as they comprehend something in the world (Fuchs, 2016). The theory also guarantees the connection of newly arising situations and existing circumstances in the domain. It ensures that consistency and tradition of knowledge continues, which is sufficient for consensus practice of every day’s needs. For instance, coming into an understanding of one another in an interrelation stands in a cultural tradition that is practiced and improved.

Regarding society, the shortcomings of social interaction and integration apply to the harmonization of behavior, while the two inter-subjectively establish the standards that legally govern personal relationships. The theory, thus, generates unity by controlling interpersonal interactions from socialization. Recent events, for example, may be related to current conditions around the world.

Finally, on the level of personality, the theory ensures that the characters with interactive competencies are formed through the socialization process. The communication theory creates a personal identity that is accepted by communicating capabilities within a historical time. For example, a growing juvenile obtains all-inclusive skills for societal action and adopts the alignment of morals of his social group through engaging in relations with individuals who have different personalities.

Importance of Communication Theory in Society

Correspondingly, the theory is essential and effective as it plays a valuable role in the understanding of human beings. Communications and interactions could help build relationships amongst societies. In addition, it aids comprehending individuals, societies, and relationships with colleagues and families. It also assists in the reinforcement of the assimilation of those with the same objective. In social production, it has formed communication of the social understanding in the cultural domain, and it contributes to sustaining all “lifeworld” elements. Therefore, effective communication always promotes a healthy and knowledgeable society.

Moreover, society and personality are always maintained by cultural reproduction. The theory has also led to socialization arrangements, educational objectives, social attachments, and even personal identity. The theory is able to establish responsibilities, interpretive accomplishments, and explanatory schemes which are fit for valuable knowledge. The concept has as well caused the autonomous kinship relation due to the advancement of class distinction. There could be a rise in official regulation concepts, which might effectively develop the law in a positive direction. Therefore, it might be easy to come to a mutual understanding as there exists a problem-solving procedure that would complement the explanations of the world amid communication subjects.

Lifeworld

Habermas explains “lifeworld” as the creation where individuals share with others every day. In this context, the world is like an experience before the operation in phenomenological or science philosophy. The lifeworld has compromised the current society, and it has been assigned to the regulation from the thesis of the global occupation of the world. Habermas develops a discussion of the procedure of juridification in the history course. The concept commonly refers to an intensification of ceremonial regulations in the development of positive ones, whereby there will be legally controlled social relations and densification of statutes that are detailing legal guidelines.

Moreover, Habermas claims that the lifeworld inclines to repel the independent works of the economy and government and asserts that a ‘standard’ remains to be law, which is confined as the established domain of practical discourse. For instance, he mentions some family decrees and schools which change social incorporation and are managed over to the directive standard in terms of administrative and financial controls. Rules do not require any practical reasoning but an intimate moral connection (Tilak & Glassman, 2020). A lawful institution such as criminal and constitutional laws refers to normatively assessed guidelines and applied ethical discourse, which remains in need of proper validation.

A perfect instance of the application of such procedures can be observed in the current Covid-19 epidemic, which has spread to every corner and in each country worldwide. The epidemic has continued to cause many deaths and has affected the world economy at a very high rate. The World Health Organization (WHO), the body which is in charge of matters concerning health globally, has formulated different ways of combating the disease. These rules and regulations are there for every country, state, and all individuals to abide by so as to help curb the spread of this virus. The WHO has involved all member states in every decision and action that it has undertaken regarding this issue; thus, the process has brought about some successes.

As Habermas has reiterated in his theory of communication, the interaction and inter-relation between parties are essential in bringing about understanding, thereby allowing society to progress. Because of a healthy relationship between member states and WHO, the body has strived to make funding available for every nation to access in order to assist in defeating the disease. Therefore, comparing it to the theory of communication, Habermas claims that, with this kind of inter-relation, understanding, and togetherness, nothing is too difficult to achieve.

Conclusion

Communication action happens to be a universal principle for society’s ability to express, and the essential rules and elementary structures in which learning subject matter is to discuss the language. Habermas has also highlighted the components of the theory of communication, which are culture, society, and personality. These structural centers of the living world are figuratively streamlined, created through communicative action of the attainment and transmission of the understanding of the culture.

This theory has assisted society because it has a cultural reproduction that has helped maintain all constituents of the lifeworld, which is both society and personality. These have been achieved by generating legitimations for the foundation in the social domain, the pattern of socialization, the goals of education for generalized competencies, and acquisition for action in the lifeworld personality sphere.
