Positivity and Staying Optimistic in Difficult Times

Remaining optimistic in the contemporary environment can be especially vital for overcoming numerous challenges. Although various negative experiences inevitably occur throughout an individual’s life, maintaining a positive outlook for the future might considerably increase one’s mental resilience. In the process of decision-making, people might refer to their most positive expectations, optimistically approaching the project’s outcomes and hoping that the best possible consequences will occur. Even though such an attitude might be deceiving, failing to account for negative results, it provides tremendous support to the individual’s psychological health. I believe that realistic optimism is a crucial trait for any person in the current age, which can often manifest as disappointing or dangerous. Even in devastating times, maintaining a positive perspective and hoping for a better future is especially vital.

Major traumatic events occurring over the course of human history have always been a significant threat to the population’s well-being, inciting fear and lack of control. In these situations, fighting for positive outcomes and addressing the emerging dangers is critical for establishing a basis towards change, surpassing the overwhelming negative emotions (Schrobsdorff). Nevertheless, in the current environment, where online communication can serve as a potential catalyst for anger, it might be more challenging to adopt a positive attitude. As excellently noted by Schrobsdorff, “rage spreads faster online than joy,” meaning that reported negative events become more dangerous to the individual’s mental health. From this perspective, remaining optimistic and hopeful for the future can be a beneficial strategy.

I believe that the online environment might possess several attributes that contribute to the faster spread of negative events and emotions, prompting outrage. However, I have also noticed that in real-time communication negative feelings are more contagious than positive, capable of drastically impacting the moods of numerous individuals. In this regard, I think that even when the situation seems threatening and hopeless, it is vital to sustain a positive outlook. Submitting to other people’s negative emotions might detrimentally affect one’s capacity for fighting, thus forcing inaction, anxiety, and depression. From my experience, directing more attention to positive events, even if they seem insignificant, can substantially increase mental resilience and prevent such undesirable outcomes.

Of particular consideration is the possibility of creating hope by adopting an optimistic perspective. In difficult times, hoping for a better future and encouraging oneself and others allows creating a positive social environment, inspiring other individuals to change the current situation. By remaining optimistic and hopeful for the future, one person can spread positivity, influencing numerous people. When someone is heavily affected by negative emotions and is on the verge of conceding, an uplifting social atmosphere or even a small encouragement can help them regain their strength and continue to fight. Thus, I believe that finding a positive aspect in a negative event and always hoping for better outcomes is advantageous not only for one individual but for a whole community.

Overall, my personal experience taught me that even when the circumstances seem dire, people should still believe in a brighter future, aiming to improve the current environment. Although traumatic events can seem especially devastating, urging society to think that the worst possible scenario is happening, countering this impact is crucial for subsequent advancement. Only when communities believe that a better future will come if they remain positive and hopeful can they be empowered to fight the influence of negativity.
