Overview of Puberty: Key Changes and Developments
Puberty and sexual maturation are a big part of adolescence. Puberty occurs between the ages of 8-14 and usually begins first in girls. Some physical changes are growth in height and weight, acne, hair growth, and changes in the sexual organs. This change in the age of puberty is causing mental health concerns for children as they are faced with not fitting in, feeling awkward and uncertain about their bodies, and forming unhealthy relationships with peers. Furthermore, gender role intensification occurs, where girls and boys are changing how they behave to fit more with their appropriate gender. This stage of life is challenging, and talking with kids about the changes and why and how they occur is essential.
Case Studies: Observations of Puberty in a Male and a Female
The Male
Puberty changes occurred early. Early puberty led to physical growth and development of sexual characteristics faster than for most peers. That led to feelings of awkwardness and misunderstanding among peers. A boy has felt unusual. In that case, early puberty affected social development because the teenager felt different compared to his peers. He experienced psychological stress and several emotional challenges.
The Female
Puberty changes occurred on time. Early puberty contributed to the emergence of self-esteem and a positive attitude toward her own body. A girl easily adapted to the physical and psychological changes during adolescence. Early puberty positively affected social development, as a girl felt more self-confident in establishing social relationships.
Timing of Puberty and Psychosocial Implications
According to Hoyt et al. (2020), “Puberty is marked by substantial increases and emerging sex differences in psychological disorders, physical activity patterns, and risky behaviors.” (p. 1). The timing of puberty can affect psychosocial personality development through differences in emotional readiness and social skills. Parents/guardians need to be attentive to the needs and emotions of teenagers regardless of when they reach puberty. They should create a favorable atmosphere for open communication and answer teenagers’ questions. Puberty-related issues that teens may face include emotional stress, a range of questions about their bodies, self-esteem, and peer relationships.
