Questions on Personal Statement and Goals

A personal mission statement combined with short-term goals provides a framework for achieving one’s goals. Namely, the mission statement is used for naming the end goal and, as a result, setting out the direction in which one wishes to move forward. In comparison, the short-term goals serve to identify the specific steps one should take during their journey to success. It can be inferred that a combination of the two is helpful: one has knowledge of their next action while keeping their destination in mind.

There are many routines that assist with following one’s goals by implementing them into daily activities. In particular, Serrat (2021) underlines that it’s important for one’s goal to be “actionable”, and for the individual to actively seek opportunities to achieve said goal. Personally, I have found it helpful to set aside five minutes each day before bedtime to review my objectives and track my progress. The sense of routine provided by this approach helps considerably in making it a steady daily activity. Meanwhile, because it only takes five minutes, it remains unobtrusive in the face of other activities. As a result, I’ve discovered that adding the practice of a five-minute goal review to my routine is beneficial.

However, it is important to be mindful of others in the pursuit of one’s goals. A reason for this is that, for many, the acknowledgment of others is a goal in itself. For those with more self-oriented goals, it can be helpful to receive the support of their close ones. For this reason, a certain degree of vulnerability is inevitable, however hard it may seem. Only by opening up can one receive guidance and help. Keeping an open mind is likewise important, as it can provide a new perspective on one’s actions.
