The Big Five Personality Traits Model in the Workplace

Personality traits and attitudes determine an employee’s interaction at the workplace. Evangelia Dimitriou and Michael Galanakis (2022) explore the Big Five Personality Traits Model and its implementation at workplaces. The authors reviewed past studies on personality traits and determined which are more productive in the workplace. Additionally, the article determines which personality traits should be prioritized by employers when recruiting new employees. Linking personality traits to employee attitudes helps in understanding their effectiveness at the workplace. Although the explored model is crucial among employers, the authors suggest that it should be improved to follow the current trends and changes in workplaces.

The article discusses the importance of five personality traits: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. Openness indicates how open-minded an employee is when executing duties and interacting with others. The authors suggest that individuals with high levels of openness can be creative, curious, and imaginative (Dimitriou & Galanakis, 2022). The tendency of employees to respond to certain things in certain ways is conscientiousness. Employees who are conscious mind their mistakes, and are always ready to improve. Extraversion refers to how outgoing an individual is. Extraverted individuals are enthusiastic and action-oriented. Therefore, extraversion is a crucial personality trait that influences positive attitudes among employees.

Meanwhile, agreeableness is a personality trait that shows how trustworthy, moral, cooperative, and altruistic is an individual. According to the authors, employees who are not agreeable can cause problems for organizations since they fail to adjust to the working environment and are less productive (Dimitriou & Galanakis, 2022). Although some people view neuroticism as a compliment, it helps in predicting an employee’s future performance. The five personality traits are significant in workplaces in equal measure. The employees who exhibit these traits are optimistic and productive at their jobs. Therefore, openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism, are crucial personality traits that influence positive attitudes and workplaces.
