First Impressions

Immediately, I unlocked the pages of The Wounded Healer, and an overflow of emotions and memoirs was all over me. I was taken back to a time when I was broken and lost, seeking sense and healing. The book reverberated intensely with my journey of survival, endurance, and empowerment, and one specific video memory started to play in my mind.

I was standing at the top of a cliff, looking at the vastness of waves hitting against the rocks underneath the cliff. The wind thrashed over my hair, which matched the rowdy storm blowing within me. The weight of my previous mistakes and disappointments loaded my shoulders, making me feel helpless, defeated, and incapable. I was overwhelmed by thoughts of my past that became real despite occurring several years ago.

In that instant of susceptibility, I overheard a faint voice, nearly like a whisper, saying, “You are not demarcated by the past wounds but by your ability to overcome them.” These words, although simple, enabled me to ignore my despair and brought a glimpse of hope to me. Transition is a topic that reminded me of the significance of permitting myself to be heard and inform other people about my wounds and struggles. With this newly gained courage, I began to share my experiences with close friends and family members. As I came to the end of the book, a sense of gratitude was all over me. I understood that my wounds should catalyze my change and journey of survival and resilience. In addition, I uncovered that I could encourage and uplift others. The video memory that rolled into my mind became a powerful testament of hope, prompting me to think that healing and growth could be possible even in my darkest moments.

Reflection

Empowerment and Experiences

After studying the book The Wounded Healer, several questions appear. First, after reading the book, a question arises: how does empowerment in being a wounded healer relate to mental health experts’ experiences in the contemporary world? This concept was discussed, as Dr. Saklani claimed that the wounding that professionals face in their work, such as burnout, makes those professionals have an aptitude for empathy (Saklani, 2018). This enables them to be more involved in supporting and assisting their patients. However, I did not find any scholarly resources that have directly analyzed how this concept is used in the current society, and I am interested in exploring the concept further. This will teach me about the relationship between empowerment and mental health providers’ experiences.

Healing Yourself

The second question is whether an individual should major in healing oneself instead of others. Although some may agree with Dr. Saklani that healing one’s wounds often enables better healing of others, there is a disagreement to be made that focusing on caring for the requirements of others is more crucial than a selfish focus on self-care. In addition, the aspect of a wounded healer is challenging since not all wounds are observable. Focusing on this concept could result in overlooking injustices that require attention. Considering these points, it is evident that more reasoning and discussions should be done to recognize how to effectively balance offering care to others with knowing one’s shortcomings.

Self-Care Against Burnout

After reading through the book, the third question is how mental health experts can engage in self-compassion and self-care as a technique to avert burnout and traumatization? From the book, self-compassion and care are essential aspects when it comes to thwarting burnout and any form of trauma (Saklani, 2018). However, Dr. Saklani failed to talk about specific approaches for engaging in self-compassion and self-care to avoid experiences of burnout in the workplace. Based on this, I am eager to learn more about any prevailing evidence-based activities for engaging in self-compassion and self-care to prevent exhaustion and vicarious traumatization. With this knowledge, I could use the concepts to alleviate burnout effectively.

Necessity of Trauma

What troubles me about The Wounded Healer is the impression that individuals must undergo pain and anguish to become healers and be able to assist other people. Dr. Saklani did a great job by discovering the personal influence sickness, misfortune, and trauma can have on a person (Saklani, 2018). However, she failed to examine the notion that individuals who have never faced traumatic situations may still be proficient healers.

This is a challenging concept that many may struggle to even talk about. Based on this, I would ask Dr. Saklani what should be undertaken to change this account. Is this an essential part of the healing, or can we shift to an approach aligned with modern thinking? Thus, the author should clarify the confusion that, after reading, some people would believe that only people with wounds can be effective healers.

Professional Culture Preventing Burnout

My final question is, what specific facets of an organization’s culture can decrease burnout and shock among mental health professionals? Dr. Saklani deliberated on how organizational and cultural aspects influence workers’ mental health. However, she failed to provide more information on what explicit characteristics of an organization’s culture can assist in lowering tension and vicarious trauma. I am concerned about learning more about the current evidence-based interventions for fostering a work setting favorable to inhibiting aspects that lead to traumatic situations among health providers. Therefore, I want to understand how an organizational culture can contribute to burnout experienced by employees.

Application

General Overview

The Wounded Healer gives readers invaluable insights on how to deal with individual and professional impediments to improving oneself and the people around them. It provides a variety of approaches that people can apply to manage the changing issues of healing through comprehension, resilience, and acceptance (Saklani, 2018). With the information from this book, I was inspired to major in mental health as a precondition for individual growth. Although having intuition on how to grow professionally is essential, the link between caring for my mental health and acquiring more significant levels of success is irrefutable. Through knowledge and management of the wellness of my mind, I can foster healthier, equally helpful relations with anyone I interact with in my professional life.

Mindful Stress Management

The first action I will take in the quest for my individual and specialized growth encompasses being mindful of how I analyze and handle stress. This means learning to understand when I feel stunned with tension and then pursuing adaptive practices to reduce it safely. As Dr. Salkani records in the book, lowering the extent of stress is crucial in one’s journey of growth and self-development (Saklani, 2018). Rather than sinking into self-destructive feelings when under stress, I can adapt interventions such as taking a rest, contemplating, writing, and speaking to individuals, which I trust to enable me to handle and lower stress. Therefore, adhering to these approaches is helping my growth journey and becoming the basis of my motivation.

Self-Awareness

A second activity I intend to take towards my personal and professional growth is self-awareness and attention to my emotional needs. According to Salkani (2018), the fundamental step to growth and self-improvement consists of a contemplative analysis of one’s mental and physical wants. To acquire this growth, it is important to recognize my emotions, how they shift with time, and determine instances in day-to-day life where I may feel stunned.

With this insight, I am effectively engaging in a more self-care approach. This comprises organizing my weekly routine to enable me to process more information I obtain daily. From having enough sleep or attending yoga classes, reading a book, and watching a movie, I will be mindful of the moments when I must take a break and be more cognizant of my emotions.

Social Support

The third step is understanding the value of forming and handling a supportive professional and personal relationship, which I will employ in my growth journey. At any stage of my life, it is essential to have adequate support to give me the guidance and nurture I need to grow. This will require me to be more conscious of things and people in my life that are beneficial and those that are not. With this, I will make deliberate decisions to foster and manage associations with individuals and organizations to give me the appropriate tools to continue my growth. As a result of these insights, I plan to enroll in school to further my career, reinforce relationships with previous friends, and link with new individuals to increase my professional network.
