Young Old and Old Old Individuals: Aging, Health, and Ageism Perspectives

‘Young Old’ Individual

Martha is a vibrant 70-year-old woman who challenges prevailing preconceptions about older individuals. She maintains a high level of physical activity, engaging in daily yoga sessions and walks. Additionally, she demonstrates cognitive agility by actively participating in activities such as puzzle solving and book club debates. Martha’s overall health is exceptional, with just periodic joint pain as a minor consequence of aging. She possesses an extroverted, sanguine nature, relishes the company of friends and family, exemplifies successful aging, and serves as a paradigm of a “young old person” (Berger, 2021).

The woman has preserved her youthfulness by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, engaging in mental and social activities, and embracing a positive outlook on the aging process. Nevertheless, Martha has experienced ageism in discreet manifestations, such as being overlooked for volunteer roles in favor of younger individuals, and feeling her abilities were unfairly judged when people expressed astonishment at her physical and mental capabilities. Another form of prejudice occurs when she is driving, as certain drivers cast her an unfavorable glance and make derogatory remarks about her driving style.

‘Old Old’ Individual

Conversely, there is an example that falls into the “old-old” classification. Gregory, an octogenarian, suffers from multiple health conditions, namely diabetes, cardiovascular illness, and the initial phases of Alzheimer’s disease, a prevalent type of cognitive decline. His physical condition hampers his mobility, and he needs help with basic activities like bathing and getting dressed. He formerly exhibited extroverted and benevolent behavior, but thereafter experienced a shift towards introversion and irritability because of health issues and cognitive deterioration.

His lifestyle sharply contrasts with Martha’s, and he embodies several prevalent prejudices about elderly individuals, including being feeble, dependent, and cognitively impaired. Gregory has experienced a decrease in his health, freedom, and social contacts, resulting in losses. He encountered ageism in the form of stigmatization and prejudice because of his health issues and dementia.

Additionally, he perceived himself as at risk due to preconceptions, feeling that his age led others to view him as less competent (Berger, 2021). Medical and technological advancements may offer some assistance in George’s efforts to combat the effects of aging. However, due to his numerous health issues and declining cognitive abilities, this endeavor is challenging.
