Aspects of Psychology Surveys

To conduct an effective survey in which bias and sampling error is minimized, several considerations have to be taken into account. First, experimenters have to “mechanize procedures as much as possible” to reduce experimenter bias (Goodwin & Goodwin, 2016, p. 178). In addition, there are risks and sampling errors that may occur as a result of participant bias. To control participant bias, researchers might need to use strategies such as deception, field research manipulation checks, and placebo control groups (Goodwin & Goodwin, 2016, p. 184). Thus, researchers need to consider possible risks that may be caused by the participant’s awareness of the research being conducted and the experimenters’ direct involvement.

The majority of people have responded to boring surveys at least once in their lives, and I am not an exception. Many of those surveys tend to consist of similar or repetitive questions, which is one of the reasons why people can be willing to stop answering the questions of the survey. It can be suggested that such surveys may seem particularly boring if they are conducted online. Judging from my own experience, I can say that I did not feel encouraged to participate in such surveys, even though I realized that they might be important to the researchers. Because of the lack of interest in the questions, I think that the accuracy level of my answers decreased the further I went through the survey. I cannot say that I was not answering the questions truthfully, but I did feel a strong desire to complete the activity as soon as possible, which could result in my responses not being completely accurate or thoughtful. I think that being offered an incentive would have little impact on my engagement and motivation to complete the survey unless I found the questions interesting.
