Competent public speakers use various techniques to connect with their audience and successfully deliver their message. Rita Pierson’s TED Talk shows just how a speaker can masterfully infuse their speech with what matters most to connect with listeners (TED, 2013). To bring out the elements that enhanced her speech, they will be evaluated based on the following four components: organization, dynamics, vocal delivery, and body and facial qualities.
The organization of the speech is excellent as Rita uses the introduction and transitions to maintain her audience until the end. She introduces herself as an educator to build her credibility on the topic that she addresses. For instance, the orator states that her grandparents and parents were educators before saying that she has been an educator for forty years. The speaker then makes a great transition by citing various examples of her real-life experiences as an educator, which further enhances the audience’s attention. Thus, the speechmaker develops her main point from personal examples and concludes by telling people how they can positively influence children.
Besides her excellent organization, the speaker’s use of various speech dynamics is great. She engages with and is passionate about everything she says. The use of personal stories about her interaction with children in class makes the audience empathize with her and the kids that she has taught. Nevertheless, Rita’s entire speech is infused with values such as the power of love and human connection, which she holds dearly.
The orator’s use of different volumes, tones, rates, and vocal variety makes things interesting throughout her speech. Sometimes she speaks with a louder voice, a faster rate, and in varied tones, while at times, she can shift to a different story and tone down to draw the listeners’ attention. Finally, the presenter’s body and facial qualities are immense, as she owns her space using various gestures. Moreover, Rita’s face is animated as she mostly smiles and keeps her eyes wide open, which enables her to deliver the message using direct eye contact. Lastly, her passion and energy are contagious, and they captivate the audience all along.
