Self-care: Well-being among Practicing Psychologists

Any professional activity requires working under pressure, which, if not appropriately managed, can lead to burnout in the long term. Professional emotional burnout can be characterized by three factors, including depersonalization, reduced feelings of accomplishment, and emotional exhaustion (Rupert & Dorociak, 2019). More than that, professional burnout is a problem that many people face (Wei et al., 2020). There are several self-care strategies proven effective in the prevention of occupational burnout. This paper presents the benefits of balanced exercising, combining the best outcomes of physical activity and thoughtful routine creation.

Regular exercise is an aspect that is instrumental in reducing stress and managing work-related anxieties. Physical activity is known for its overall positive effect on general mental health. A study by Dyrbye et al. (2017) showed reduced risks of burnout among medical students who exercised regularly. Therefore, regular gym and swimming pool attendance can be incorporated as a self-care strategy for occupational burnout prevention.

To enhance the effectiveness of exercising, one should follow a personal schedule. Creating a cycle of actions or habits aimed at stress relief is a part of ensuring that one has time for such interventions as physical activity. According to Rupert and Dorociak (2019), self-care’s positive influence is strengthened by a proactive and balanced implementation. Thus, by planning when to engage in physical activity, one can successfully manage the emotions and signs of tiredness and stress experienced in the professional field.

In conclusion, physical exercise that is planned can be a great addition to one’s self-care routine. Using scheduling for exercising allows for more effective prevention of professional burnout. At the same time, physical activity improves one’s health and mental wellbeing. As research shows, proactive approaches to managing stress are more effective than the sporadic implementation of the same techniques. Therefore, one should create a plan and exercise regularly to achieve the best results.
