A boom in mental health issues is being observed in modern society due to the multiscale influence coming from social media. Since their emergence, popular networks such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat have had an enormous impact on young individuals (Sadagheyani and Tatari 42). By following rich and famous bloggers, people started experiencing severe problems with self-esteem, self-expression, and confidence. Hence, this paper will investigate why the issue has become acute and how mental health is becoming a primary concern these days.
The internet expansion proclaimed the era of looks outmaneuvering everything else. The researchers identified that young individuals likely to use social media as a means of distraction had found themselves in mental distress (Sadagheyani and Tatari 42). The major issues they encounter are lack of proper sleep and nutrition, tendencies towards self-harm and suicide, depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem (Sadagheyani and Tatari 49). News sources also pay attention to the tangibility of the concern around social media users. While scientific research demonstrates the analysis conducted among trial groups, the magazines show real cases that prove the negative impact. Hence, both scholarly and news sources investigate the issue in equal proportion because it is the cornerstone of provoking a myriad of psychological problems.
When discussing the devastating influence of the popular network on one’s psyche, it is vital to view some examples. The first one comes from the episode of a famous TV show, Black Mirror, where people are obsessed with social media as they could rate each other. This rating is based on the number of good deeds one commits. The main character attempts to become an image of perfection, which leads her to self-destruction. This instance proves that the more people act to fit the standards, the more likely they will lose their authentic selves.
The other case came from real life when parents gifted their daughter Lea with a phone. Upon receiving a present, a 14-year-old teen created social media accounts and found online friends (Hassanyeh – Beirut). After a few months of using her device, her parents started observing her isolation from real friends and relatives. Moreover, Lea expressed the desire to end her life (Hassanyeh – Beirut). The case shows how children’s psyche is susceptible to outer opinion. The chosen example also demonstrates that parents must speak to kids about their concerns.
Considering the complexity of the selected topic, there could be some issues while writing the essay. First, excessive material usage is related to the adverse impact of social media on one’s health. Therefore, it would be preferable to narrow down the topic to at least one aspect of its influence (e.g., social media as a factor of low self-esteem). Second, the paper may touch on the ethical side of the topic. It signifies that all the private information used in the essay should be protected by credible sources. Confidentiality and non-disclosure of personal data are critical factors of proper research.
In conclusion, the topic is highly relevant and needs to be studied more carefully. Primarily, this paper will dwell on the significant psychological struggles people face using social networks and their consequences. The prevalent part will focus on the mechanism of mental issue development while utilizing media. I will make sure to set deadlines for specific elements of my writing. This is how I am going to stay on track with my assignment.
