The Problem of Deviant Behavior: Case Description and Diagnoses

Past and Present Symptoms

Adriana is an aggressive, uncontrollable, and impulsive girl; she is passive, expressionless, and shows a wide range of shortcomings in the emotional sphere. Previously, the child had depersonalization, alienation, inability to construct interpersonal relationships, frustration with intimate and personal forms of communication, and outbursts of anger, irritability, and resentment. The actual symptoms indicate delays in physical and mental development, difficulties in cooperation with adults and peers, a low level of social intelligence, and pronounced maladaptation. During the intake session, the girl tried to climb into the lap of an “outsider.” With greater confidence, one should assume that Adriana is a difficult child who is part of the “risk group.”

Period of Disturbance and Diagnosis

The period of disturbance was approximately from the moment when Adriana turned two years old. Usually, during this time, adults have suspicions about specific skills and inclinations of the baby. As a rule, the symptoms fully reveal themselves closer to three or four years. The data obtained give specific grounds to assert that Adriana has problems with self-identification, difficulties in interacting with adults and peers, disharmony in thinking, as well as delay in mastering educational skills and abilities.

Diagnoses to Rule Out

Diagnoses that need to be excluded relate to speech aspects and hyperactivity, gross violations of discipline, and a tendency to additive (self-destructive) behavior. Primarily, the information received illustrates some progress in improving language and speech skills. In addition, during the intake session, Adriana demonstrated an unspoken need for attention, care, and support, trying to sit on the interviewer’s lap but not aggressive and uncontrollable behavior.

Summary of Case

At the moment, specialists can observe the problem of deviant behavior in Adriana, which requires professional approaches to develop specific forms of its implementation. The absence of precise, accurate, and objective data can lead to severe consequences that may flow smoothly into Adriana’s adult life (Koning, 2019). At least the first manifestations of deviant behavior are explained by the relatively low level of the child’s intellectual development, “defects” in the formation of personality, the negative influence of the family, and the immediate environment. A study of the emotional sphere of the girl must be carried out. At the same time, a more thorough and thorough analysis is required before making conclusions.
