Carl Rogers is the founder and promoter of a client-centered therapy, which, based on the name, focuses on the patient. According to the author, this style implies customized specialists for each patient to ensure the highest level of comfort and satisfaction (Folmo, n.d.). Moreover, in this case, the therapist can gain a better understanding of the client’s feelings, both superficial and deep. This will help the specialist to build the right cause-and-effect relationships and come to the right strategy for solving the problem.
I believe that this therapy can have many benefits for me. One of them is to ensure a relaxed state since I may have difficulty pouring out my feelings to another person. In the case of client-centered therapy, because of the psychologist’s intention to better understand the client and give him a sense of satisfaction, I think this approach would be practical for me. However, the main disadvantage I see is the process’s possible incomplete competence and correctness due to the therapist’s feeling of empathy towards the individual.
Fritz Perls uses the principles of Gestalt therapy in working with his clients. This approach in psychology implies the development of awareness and self-direction of the patient and focuses not on past events but the present (Duncan, n.d.). This type of therapy is used to help a person with psychological problems learn to fully realize what is happening to him and respond correctly to these events. Moreover, it is noted that the patient’s internal problems need to be solved, as they interfere with comfort and well-being.
I think that the main advantage of this type of therapy may be not adhering to providing comfort to the patient. On the contrary, gestalt therapy puts people in an uncomfortable position; it provokes confrontation. In such circumstances, individuals may have the opportunity to work with their character flaws. However, I believe that focusing on the present may not be enough since many people’s problems come from the past.
Albert Ellis is the founder of rational emotional therapy based on several fundamental propositions. Unlike Gestalt therapy, this approach considers the individual’s experience. However, it emphasizes that the past does not affect individuals and their problems as much as they might think it does (Walraven, 2014). In other words, the prominent people responsible for their well-being are the people themselves, not their background.
An exciting aspect of rational emotional therapy is the statement that people create negative emotions and experiences for themselves. When experiencing this approach in psychology, I would feel a sense of inquiry since I believe that the power of self-persuasion is underestimated. At the same time, I believe that considering this factor only limits this therapy since many external factors affect the formation of an individual.
