Video Description Using a CLASS Chart: Comparison and Contrast

In the video Being Aware Proximity Behavior, little boy Salim accidentally causes the roof of a wooden house to fall. This slight mistake makes the other boy, Gabe, quite angry with him. However, the teacher quickly uses indicators of positive communication and respect to de-escalate the situation (CLASS, n.d.). She notices that Gabe has an angry look on his face and offers him an opportunity to express the reason for his anger. Due to the teacher’s proactive actions, the positive climate between the children quickly rebuilds (CLASS, n.d.). Just a few seconds later, Salim and Gabe peacefully play together again. Overall, the teacher’s proximity to children and shared activity allowed preventing a possible fight with a few timely said words.

The Hereโ€™s The Timer Behavior video has certain similarities with the previous case. The teacher maintained proximity and shared activities with children, which allowed her to control any possible developments of the situation (CLASS, n.d.). In addition, she found a way to involve the other boy in playing with Andy. Furthermore, all communication with children was done in a positive tone, regardless of their behavior. The teacher probably did not expect that Andy would suddenly break Lego pieces apart; however, she held her composure and even helped Andy clean the room. In that regard, teachers in both videos were quite careful in the redirection of misbehavior (CLASS, n.d.). Instead of telling Gabe to stop being angry with Salim or forcing Andy to put the Legos away, the teachers acted respectfully and corrected behavior while keeping the children content. As a result, both teachers managed to keep the classroom organized and provide children with the necessary emotional support. Overall, both videos showed examples of how a teacher should create a comfortable learning environment for little children and maintain a peaceful atmosphere.
