A Study of Causes of Stress and Stress Management Among Youth

Johnson is a mechanical engineering student at the University of Cambridge. Recently, he has been admitted to the hospital and is now going through medical checkups and counseling as a result of severe depression due to prolonged developed school life stress. Johnson is in his third year of studying, and his uncle, who has been funding him his whole education life, passed away a few months ago. Johnson is finding it hard to cope with his education as he lacks the finances to aid his education. Besides, Johnson’s immediate results after his uncle’s death were below average, indicating that he is still struggling with the condition. Johnson had the ambition to secure a good job after college to provide for his poor-aged parents, a dream that now seems unfeasible. The recent reports from his lecturer indicate that he is usually late or sometimes fails to attend lessons, or sometimes meditates while in class. As such, Johnson is experiencing headaches and a lack of motivation in his life.

The article “A study of causes of stress and stress management among youth” by Bhargava & Trivedi is informative and insightful as stress among students is concerned. The article starts by acknowledging stress among the youth as real. In modern societies, cases of depression, suicides, and other psychological symptoms among the youth are typical scenarios that indicate that stress is killing the young generations. According to Bhargava & Trivedi (2018), adolescence is a unique stage of development where young children learn self-organization and are often characterized by confusion. This age demands extra care and good parenting that allows full development to gain valuable skills in stress management. Adolescents are school-going children either in high schools or in colleges and universities. Bhargava &Trivedi (2018) identify some causes of stress among school-going children. The notorious stressors are lack of adequate finance, career exploration, academic test and results, interpersonal relations, and relationship problems.

The article’s research findings indicate that stress among students is not a new thing in school life. Most of the students sometimes get nervous towards the starting of semester exams which is linked to fear of failing and lack of preparedness for the examinations. Again, finance is also another stressor when it comes to the life of students, especially those in colleges. Education is expensive, and every activity needs money — school fees, book fees, and other money-demanding services while in college. Therefore, many students struggle to cope with the little resources that they have. According to Bhargava & Trivedi (2018), the uncertainty about career exploration is also an issue as stress among students concerned. Students sometimes think a lot concerning their possibilities of securing a job. With current unemployment figures in the country, most lose hope and, as such, get stressed.

The knowledge of this article helps counselors with the required skills necessary for advising Johnson, a client who is struggling to manage stress due to a lack of school fees. The article has striven to expound on the probable causes of stress among students and, as such, help counselors to give appropriate advice concerning the case of our client Johnson. Shulman (2016) presents strategies and skills that help individuals cope with their condition. Therefore, Johnson should identify the stress source in his life and deal with them accordingly to live a stress-free life. Moreover, Shulman also advises that he should get moving and fight for his freedom through involving in physical activities that keep his mind busy.
