Factors That Shape Our Qualities of Personality

“Man’s main task in life is to give birth to himself, to become what he potentially is. The most important product of his effort is his own personality.” Erich Fromm.

Many events in the world influence the kind of personalities people become: good or bad accidents, stopping at school or work, meeting other people, social orders. It is difficult to say precisely which factors serve as catalysts for personality formation because each person creates themselves and the involvement of universal experience. However, I think that all have several important character traits: purposefulness, self-development, and self-sufficiency in one way or another. These characteristics and their expression determine what kind of person one can become. I want to become the best version of myself because I do not currently possess them fully.

To become a complete and dignified member of society, you need to have a goal that will serve as a guide. I think that the plan will always accompany the path of development and will be a companion that can protect the person. For me, a vital commandment is a purposefulness that will allow one to realize one’s potential. I think it will also pave the way for me to become successful. I am sure everyone knows Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who has had an astounding career. He seems like a goal-oriented, confident man and those are striking qualities that I find very inspiring (Adetayo). Furthermore, he came to success through his perseverance and talents, which have developed throughout his career. I think his example is a great one to focus on high performance.

Self-development is one of my precepts that I want and will stick to: I think it’s the criterion that gives society a measure of your usefulness. I try to invest in my development: reading, studying history and art, modern IT tools. It is probably the pursuit of self-development that can create a societal benefit, and I think everyone should do it. The most powerful and influential personality in self-development for me is Leonardo da Vinci – a talented artist, biologist, scientist. He was constantly evolving and looking for new ways to gain more knowledge – his writings are still an example of astounding skill and drive (Leonardo da Vinci, his Life and Artworks). To me, he is an inspiring historical figure who was able to exceed expectations through hard work and perseverance. I want to develop a thirst for knowledge and self-development strategies.

Independence is a quality that is hard to achieve and a little mysterious because not everyone develops it. It is created if the child grows up with intelligence and critical thinking skills; if one learns the world and if parents help do it. Help from family is an essential part of our lives, but every parent should know that their child’s independence rests on their shoulders (Saputri et al. 163). Independence as a quality stands out because it promotes personal development. I want to be independent of my parents, and I try to follow a separate path. I feel like I am similar to Dustin from Stranger Things in this. Dustin is an only child who faces many challenges and is willing to deal with them without involving a single mom. Sure, he accepts help from friends and elders, but he shows that his independence lies in his ability to make rational decisions.

Each person is influenced by the external environment from events, friends, and family; the internal by character, personality. Essential precepts of life that shape me are purposefulness: perseverance to achieve success, the desire for self-development, and independence. These qualities define me as a strong individual who wants to contribute to society. It seems that everyone should strive to be that way because that is what makes us human.
