Overcoming Stage Fright: Behavior Modification Techniques

It is important to point out that stage fright is a psychological challenge, which is a form of performance anxiety linked to the factor of performing in front of a group of people, such an audience. The phenomenon can affect individuals experiencing or prone to stage fright on a multitude of levels, which include behavioral, cognitive, and physiological effects. The issue can be overcome through a wide range of relaxation techniques, behavioral techniques, as well as behavioral modification.

In order to effectively prevent stage fright, one should understand the reasons behind such a state. The common factors include overestimation rejection and others’ opinions, underestimation of one’s abilities, and unrealistic assessment of the audience’s expectation (TopDoctors, 2021). These triggers lead to a cascade of physiological and psychological changes of anxiety, which hinders a person’s performance on stage. The simple and standard prevention measures are relaxation techniques aimed at reducing the effects of anxiety, which can include medications as well (TopDoctors, 2021). However, the literature suggests that one of the most effective solutions for overcoming stage fright is Behavioral Modification techniques conducted for more than a month prior to the performance date (Jangir & Govinda, 2018). It is stated that “Behaviour Modification techniques are efficient in reducing stage fright, performance anxiety and increase in self-esteem,” and the effects linger for longer duration or even can become permanent (Jangir & Govinda, 2018, p. 126).

In conclusion, stage fright is a form of anxiety related to performance in front of an audience. It can have implications in behavioral, physiological, and cognitive domains. It should be noted that certain relaxation techniques can be helpful for immediate intervention. Behavioral Modification measures can be considered as a highly effective method of overcoming stage fright, which is a systematic process of long-term behavioral alteration and control.
