Memory and learning are closely related concepts. While learning is a process of acquiring skills and specific sets of knowledge, memory is an essential part of learning as it lets individuals remember the comprehended material. Therefore, it is clear that learning depends on the ability to memorize particular things and concepts, and to improve learning, one must concentrate on developing memory. Some multiple methods and techniques allow us to make learning more efficient. This short essay will focus on two of them: retrieval-based learning and using emotions for enhancing memory.

Improving memory can be achieved by so-called “retrieval-based learning” that recognizes memory retrieval’s central role. It means that once the knowledge or skill is acquired, it should not be set aside but recalled regularly. According to researchers, “every time a memory is retrieved, that memory becomes more accessible in the future” (Karpicke, 2016, para. 3). Constant repetition and retrieval allow making learning deeper, engaging, and more meaningful. It benefits not only remembering learning materials but also using the acquired knowledge in more complex situations and contexts.

Another method of making learning more effective is using emotions to enhance memory. As noted by researchers, “emotional events are remembered more clearly, accurately and for longer periods than are neutral events” (Tyng et al., 2017, p. 22). Therefore, it might be useful to use this in learning environments and create memories to improve the learning process. New types of activities, use of different materials appealing to various senses, and a pleasant learning atmosphere can be beneficial as all of them would invoke positive emotions.
