Today, sharing personal inclination in media sources is a trend that cannot be ignored. The theme of the coronavirus crisis has already touched millions of citizens on the planet and continues shaping the quality of life. In his article, Achenbach gives the numbers about the virus and underlines how the situation influences the US population’s mental health. The author defines anxiety and other emotional and behavioral changes as an expected outcome regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, and the goal is to support the reader and share some recommendations. Compared to Achenbach, Winch chooses another position and discusses the population’s weakness regarding the coronavirus. His article is one-sided to blame the government for the inability to develop enough national and international programs and deal with the mental health crisis. According to this author, massive uncertainty is a problem to be solved, and governments and institutions should take certain responsibilities.
Another point that differentiates the chosen articles about the coronavirus is the types of sources that enhance the credibility of the information. Achenbach relies on the findings introduced by the Kaiser Family Foundation and the contributions made by several individuals (Scott Clement and Emily Guskin). The use of statistics from primary sources increases the article’s reliability and shows the author’s desire to investigate and make reasonable conclusions. In comparison, Winch neglects statistics and the importance of other credible sources to develop a subjective opinion about the unpreparedness of professional organizations to deal with mental health outcomes of the COVID-19 crisis. Several articles from online magazines are referenced to explain the rise of loneliness as a serious public health problem, but their credibility is hard to check. Therefore, Achenbach’s work may be considered an objective evaluation of the situation, and Winch’s writing is a collection of several subjective thoughts and opinions.
