Effective counseling depends on the effectiveness of data collection and the client’s evaluation. For this reason, psychologists might use various types of assessment.
Forensic assessment can be defined as the application of theory and psychological evaluation and measurement in a legal context (Cohen & Swerdlik, 2018, p. 469). For example, it is used when the court needs an expert opinion about a particular case and motifs impacting a person’s actions. In these situations, psychologists perform this type of evaluation to collect necessary data and provide an informed conclusion.
Therapeutic assessment can be viewed as a collaborative approach to evaluating a person (Cohen & Swerdlik, 2018, p. 6). It implies promoting a better understanding of self, self-discovery, and new understandings that would lead to an enhanced vision of personality and major traits. It is used in various situations when an individual wants to determine his/her major traits and features.
Psychological assessment is the collection and integration of psychology-related information to evaluate a person psychologically by using tests, interviews, case studies, behavioral observation, and specific procedures (Cohen & Swerdlik, 2018, p. 1). It should be used to determine the current state of a person, especially if any problems are observed, and select the most appropriate method to help him/her.
Personality assessment can be determined as the evaluation and measurement of psychological traits, values, interests, attitudes, worldview, behavioral and cognitive styles, acculturation, sense of humor, and other critical individual characteristics (Cohen & Swerdlik, 2018, p. 355). It can be used in schools, clinics, hospitals, and other settings to determine the peculiarities of a person to determine how people might behave in certain situations or plan interventions.
All these types of assessment can be used for intervention and planning purposes. For instance, by using specific checklists and tests, specialists can create the basis for successful and effective counseling. It will help to promote mental health and improve individuals’ states.
