The Science of Improving Motivation at Work

The article analyzes ways through which individuals and firms can improve motivation at work. According to the author, the work environment is a crucial determinant of the overall level of motivation in an organization as it determines how employees view their work (Souders, 2020). Managers can improve the overall motivation of their employees by providing meaningful work, establishing effective communication channels, and providing employees with opportunities for fulfillment.

The article is critical of the traditional view of motivation that emphasizes rewards as a source of motivation. Employees instead need much more personalized methods of motivation that will encourage them to be creative and innovative in their work. The author argues that the provision of interesting and challenging work is the most effective motivational tool that managers can use. As the author noted, “Interesting and challenging activities are often rewarding in themselves” (Souders, 2020, p. 10). Employees who handle this type of work will be intrinsically motivated and will have the opportunity to use their creativity and innovativeness.

The article also discusses various theories of motivation and their practical application to the modern work environment. Key theories analyzed include the Hertzberg two-factor theory, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory, and other popular theories used to explain the nature of motivation (Souders, 2020). Since each theory has unique recommendations, the author believes managers can include the strategies proposed by each theory in the design of their employee motivation plan.

The article explains the relationship between motivation and other aspects of the operations of an organization such as job performance leadership and good business practices. The author believes that effective motivation plays a critical role in influencing all other key aspects of the performance and operations of a firm (Souders, 2020). By crafting a reliable motivational strategy, organizations can substantially improve the productivity of their employees and the overall performance of their organizations.
