Anxiety is a normal process in the body that is referred to as “the fight/flight response”. Its purpose is to make a person stay alert, and thus protect him/her from real or imaginary danger. However, a continued inability to positively cope with anxiety can result in a disorder. The victim succumbs to anxiety attacks which make him/her unable to function properly in social and professional settings. This may have adverse effects, which could be mental, physical o behavioral on the individual (Ochello, 2003). Anxiety may have adverse effects on its victims. For instance, it may lead to a nervous breakdown that renders the victim incapable of performing functions he/she previously used to perform. Other victims may suffer confusion, withdrawal, insomnia, low self-esteem, loss of energy, and the like.

In such a case, anxiety is a mental disorder that can also attract other disorders. For instance, the stress associated with a nervous breakdown could cause the victim to suffer depression for an extended period. This may, in turn, exacerbate the anxiety of the person (Hata, 2005). To conquer anxiety, the victim must be willing to deal with the stress-causing the anxiety. This can be done by using one of the three most effective methods depending on the situation of the victim. The first option is action-oriented, and it requires the victim to confront the source of the problem/stress and clear things out. For instance, if the issue is work-related, the victim may talk with his/her supervisor about it and express how he/she feels.

The second option is emotion-oriented, and it requires the victim of the anxiety to embrace a positive feeling about the stress, or the source of the same. This will minimize the effects that the stress will have on him/her, and thus the victim will be able to beat the anxiety. The third option is based on the acceptance of the stress. It is an appropriate approach after everything else fails to work. The victim disregards the stress and creates buffers to the stress for healthy co-existence with it (Matei, 2011). This source is credible because it employs a vivid and pragmatic approach in explaining how one can deal with anxiety.

In this article, Ozman (2010) highlights the fact that stress management skills, the first step towards containing anxiety, is as relevant to paramedics as it is to their clients.

He even argues that paramedics who are incapable of managing their stress well face more risks of anxiety attacks that may lead to depression, drug abuse, and burnout. In such cases, the paramedic never releases the stress causing the anxiety, or he/she uses destructive means of managing it. This, therefore, puts the health and careers of paramedics in jeopardy due to the nature of their job. This source is credible because it is relevant to the topic, and also because it is on point.
