Personality Disorder is a long-term pattern of how someone feels, thinks, and behaves, which causes problems or distress from what culture expects. This disorder can be inherited or influenced by the environment or experiences. It affects how one response emotionally, relates with others or thinks about themselves and others (Kramer, 2019). This paper will discuss paranoid personality disorder and how it is similar to my personality.
Paranoid Personality Disorder is a mental illness in a group of eccentric or Cluster A personality disorder conditions. People with this disorder may be peculiar and odd and can be easily insulted. Research shows that this disorder affects 2.3% of the general population (Kramer, 2019). This disorder is characterized by general mistrust, where the affected individuals experience paranoid delusions and long-standing suspiciousness. They have tendencies to interpret other people as their enemies and have an exaggerated sense of personal rights. They experience emotional withdrawals when they are not emotionally involved with others.
This disorder shares common aspects with my personality, whereby I always tend to be on guard for clues that someone might be attempting to threaten or deceive me. No matter who the person is, I always question their trustworthiness and truthfulness (Kramer, 2019). When I feel like I am being persecuted or rejected, I tend to respond with anger and hostility and blame others. I become overly sensitive to perceived criticism and insults and immediately hold grudges. As a result of research, people dealing with Paranoid Personality Disorder should not be considered powerless because they seek treatment to develop communication skills and build empathy and trust.
